Start with a job, not a tool

The most common mistake is choosing a tool first. Start instead with a job you already do every week and quietly dislike: writing the newsletter, thinking of social posts, replying to the same enquiry for the tenth time.

Five jobs AI is genuinely good at

  1. First drafts. Anything easier to edit than to start.
  2. Rewording. The same message for an email, a post and a flyer.
  3. Ideas in bulk. Twenty headline options in a few seconds.
  4. Summarising. Long documents into the three points that matter.
  5. Repetitive replies. Polite, consistent answers to common questions.

Three jobs to be careful with

  • Anything where being wrong matters: legal, medical, financial or safety information.
  • Anything needing real facts about your business. Supply them; never let a tool invent them.
  • Anything claiming results, reviews or statistics you cannot prove.

A sensible first week

Pick one job. Do it with AI three times. Keep what worked and write it down. That written-down version is your process, and it is worth more than any clever prompt.

What good looks like

Good AI output sounds like you on a good day. If it sounds like a brochure written by a committee, the brief was too vague — not the tool.
